There’s nothing that can ease your existential angst like a beautiful sunset. And Puerto Escondido is home to some of the most beautiful beaches and wildlife in Mexico.

Located on the Atlantic Ocean, just east of Alcapulco, its claim to fame is its glorious sunsets, which are best viewed on the beach.

Of course, you don’t need to watch every sunset while copping a spot on the sand here — there are several ways to enjoy golden hour, including at rooftop bars, horseback riding tours, and sunset cruises.

Discover some of the best places to see the Puerto Escondido sunsets.

Best Places to See the Sunset in Puerto Escondido

You certainly don’t need to spend a lot of money or hire a tour guide to see the sunset in Puerto Escondido.

If you want to go it alone, head to one of the many beaches or rooftop bars in the city.

Some of my favorite spots to enjoy the sunset in Puerto Escondido include the following.

Best Puerto Escondido Beach to See the Sunset – Playa Bacocho

Playa Bacocho is easily my favorite beach in Puerto Escondido.

Not only is it further off the beaten path than other beaches, like Zicatela, but it’s also home to the Puerto Escondido turtle release

You could easily spend the day at Playa Bacocho, as there are plenty of activities in this part of Puerto Escondido. Nearby, on Benito Juarez, sit several highly-rated restaurants. This neighborhood is such a “foodie” area that it’s considered one of the best spots for authentic Mexican cuisine in the city.

But you don’t need to spend the entire day in this part of Puerto Escondido if you just want to enjoy golden hour.

There are several ways to watch the sunset on Playa Bacocho. The first is simply on the beach itself.

It’s free to access Playa Bacocho. You can simply walk down the beach and enjoy the golden hues of the setting sun.

The second is at the Hotel Villasol Beach Club. If you’re staying at Hotel Villasol, admission to the beach club is included in your nightly rate.

Not staying at Hotel Villasol? That’s OK, too. You can pay a minimal fee (around $15 USD per person) and get a Club de Playa Villasol day pass

Stay all day or arrive just before sunset.

I recommend staying the day here, as your admission fee goes toward a credit for food and drink. You can also get bar service (including food) on the beach and at the pool.

You can also use the tennis courts and showers at the club.

Of course, one of the best sunset activities at Playa Villasol is the Playa Bacocho turtle release.

There are several tour companies that sell this experience for around $30 (USD), but you can do it for around $8 if you head directly to the turtle sanctuary at around 5 p.m.

Take a baby turtle to release into the ocean at sunset, and learn about the local conservation efforts.

Rooftop Bars in Puerto Escondido

You can get the best sunset views in Puerto Escondido from one of the beaches, but you don’t need to head to the beach every evening to enjoy the colors.

If you want to switch it up a little and enjoy a lovely cocktail while watching the sunset in Puerto Escondido, check out one of the rooftop bars.

In my opinion, Puerto Roof is the best bar to enjoy the sunset. You get a view of the ocean, and the bar has more of a cafe vibe than a club one.

When it comes to finding the best spots in any tourist destination, it’s always best to turn to the locals – tours transport you to the best places to view Puerto Escondido sunsets.

Puerto Escondido Sunset Tours

When it comes to finding the best spots in any tourist destination, it’s always best to turn to the locals.

Sunset tours transport you to the best places to view Puerto Escondido sunsets.

Whether you’re on a boat — or even atop a horse — these tours will take you to the best spots to see the setting sun.

Best Sunset Cruise in Puerto Escondido

What better way to see the sunset than over the ocean?

Several companies offer sunset cruises in Puerto Escondido, so you’ll have your pick of experiences — especially during the busier seasons.

Ocean Travel Huatulco is one of the few companies that offers a public cruise at sunset.

Technically, the tour begins around 2 p.m. and lasts until midnight. But not only do you get to cruise from from Bahias de Huatulco to Puerto Escondido, but you can also participate in a baby turtle release as well as explore the bioluminescent lagoon, Manialtepec, after dark.

If you only want to enjoy the sunset by boat, you could book a private yacht tour for just a few hours.

Mazunte Horseback Riding

There are several different companies that offer sunset horseback riding tours in Puerto Escondido.

Choose one that includes a few different landscapes — not only the beach. That way, you’ll get to see more of the Puerto Escondido ecosystem.

Pretty much all of the tours get to the beach by sunset, so you’ll still be able to enjoy the sight of by golden hour by the ocean.

Puerto Escondido Experiencias Nativas offers such a tour.

You’ll start by riding along the banks of the Manialtepec River, where you’ll enjoy views of the countryside. The tour ends at the beach, where you can enjoy snacks prepared by locals, including drinks and local seafood.

I love tours like this because they feel like a full experience.

Sure, you’ll enjoy the sunset in a scenic spot, but you’ll also get an overview of the surrounding areas while supporting local businesses.
